Subaru Celebrates 10 Years of Being Green

Green manufacturing has been a trend in recent years, but Subaru has spent the last decade committed to the environmental sustainability by operating zero-landfill manufacturing plants.

In the past, waste from manufacturing and production was simply considered a cost of doing business. Today a shift toward sustainability is driving businesses to find ways to reduce their footprint. Subaru has lead the way as North America’s first auto assembly plant to back the push toward zero-landfill. Reaching zero-landfill status means 100% of manufacturing waste is recycled or turned into electricity.

Subaru’s plants are very conscientious about managing waste. Bar-coded containers are weighed at each assembly station, which allows tracking of waste from individual stations. Packaging items used for shipping engines is returned to Subaru’s plant in Japan for reuse. The company doesn’t attribute one specific approach to their success, but rather says that it is a combination of one thousand great ideas. Subaru’s philosophy encourages the empowerment of employees to contribute solutions. Many of those ideas came from employees working directly in the plant. As a result, waste from Subaru manufacturing plants has been kept out of landfills since 2004.

With a solid commitment to environmental sustainability, Subaru continues to be a leader by sharing their success and encouraging other organizations to join the movement toward zero-landfill by offering business to business zero-landfill training at no cost.

Subaru says Hello to the Hybrid

When it comes to vehicles, eco-friendliness and hybrids go hand in hand. Of course, there are other contributing factors, but a hybrid has become the face of environmental responsibility. And now Subaru has a hybrid that complements our sustainable outlook.

Hello, Hybrid

The 2014 XV Crosstrek hybrid is Subaru's first hybrid, with everything you expect from us. It still has our standard All-Wheel Drive and boxer engine, so you don't have to give anything up, you just get more!

With the Crosstrek hybrid, you'll see the 148 horsepower, 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine paired with a 13.4 horsepower electric motor in the drive train. Are you doing the math? That means you get 160 horsepower to all four wheels with your CVT transmission.

Like we said, you aren't giving anything up with the hybrid Crosstrek. The gasoline engine is the same as the one in the non-hybrid Crosstrek. Subaru decided to insert the electric motor and equip the hybrid with fuel-saving features like low rolling resistance tires and active grille shutters to manage air flow around the vehicle. That's fuel efficiency and environmental responsibility all added to the Subaru you already know and love!

The 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid is a Subaru through-and-through — it comes well-equipped right out of the gate. If you’re looking for comfort and convenience features that are perfectly suited to a long drive, look no further. If you want plenty of useable interior space for that next adventure, this is your crossover. In fact, if you want to explore and use less, this is the Subaru for you.

Go Green with Subaru

We're always shouting from the rooftops about how committed we are to our drivers, but there's more to Subaru than great cars. Subaru is dedicated to being a responsible corporate citizen, protecting natural resources, the local and national environment and human health. We go beyond following environmental laws and regulations and integrate sound environmental practices in everything we do and everything we decide.

Subaru's commitment

We believe we go above and beyond when it comes to lowering our eco-footprint as a corporation and we are proud of its total business commitment to our most important resource – the environment. Our level of commitment to the environment is what makes Subaru a Subaru; it is the cornerstone of our business activities each and every day. Our commitments include:
  • Complying with all environmental laws, regulations and other requirements related to our business activities.
  • Implementing effective pollution prevention systems that protect our air, water and land.

  • Implementing effective improvement activities related to energy, waste and water reduction.

  • Establishing a corporate-wide program to reduce, re-use and recycle in all areas of our corporation.

  • Implementing a culture of continual improvement as it relates to all business activities that have an impact on the environment.

  • Raising employee awareness and involvement.

  • Working hand in hand with business partners to promote green practices.

Working hard to make a change

Under our parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, Subaru has worked hard to change the ingredients that make up our business footprint by focusing on those activities and services which can or do impact the environment, and making changes to reduce, and in some cases eliminating those impacts. We are so proud of what we have done so far and have great expectations for the future. We want to be a company you trust, both as a driver and as a citizen, so know that we are doing all we can to protect the world we live in.

Subaru Technology Exclusive: Partial Zero Emission Vehicles

Posted by Devin Kaulback

Here in Niagara, we are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful regions of Ontario. And so, Subaru of Niagara wants to do our part in protecting the environment and keep it beautiful. That's why we are happy to let you know about Subaru's Partial Zero Emission Vehicles (PZEV) as an affordable eco-friendly alternative, now available in the Legacy, Outback and Forester!

What is a Subaru PZEV?

The Subaru PZEV is a no-compromise eco-friendly vehicle that gives you piece of mind when it comes to sustainability. Although it runs on regular unleaded fuel, the Subaru PZEV has clear smog-reducing benefits compared to non-PZEV vehicles, included hybrids, diesels and other alternative fuel vehicles.

It is the cleanest-running gasoline-powered vehicle on the market and was developed to meet the most stringent air quality standards in North America (that's in California for those trivia buffs out there). In order to be labeled as a PZEV, a vehicle must meet the Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle tailpipe standard and have zero evaporative emissions. Mother Earth loves it!

How it works

Subaru PZEVs reduce smog-forming emissions with four modifications, leading to less impact on the environment when you start your ignition.

Catalytic Converter

The passageways in a PZEV converter have a larger and finer mesh to reduce emissions. The mesh changes the molecular structure of the harmful emissions and releases fewer pollutants into the air.

Fuel Injectors

PZEV fuel injectors prevent leakage of evaporative emissions with a tighter seal.

Dual-filtration air intake

In a PZEV, the air intake has a charcoal canister to absorb evaporative hydrocarbon emissions. Conventional vehicles don't have this feature, so unburned gas fumes can escape through the air intake after the engine is shut off.

Engine Control Module

The worst emissions happen with cold start conditions, and we know all about those here. The Engine Control Module in PZEVs has been altered. delaying the ignition timing and making the exhaust gasses hotter, which kicks everything into gear faster.

Advantages of a Subaru PZEV

When you get behind the wheel of a Subaru PZEV, you're guaranteed to have the same advantages of any other Subaru vehicle — and then some:

  • Environmental benefits ... Now!
  • The same performance you know and love
  • Hassle-free ownership
  • Subaru's exceptional safety
  • Real reliability
  • Affordability
  • Easy-to-use technology
  • No alternative fuels necessary
  • Zero-Landfill Manufacturing
